The EFQM Excellence Model™ contains a series of prompts that provide an exhaustive and useful reminder of how role model organisations operate. These prompts look at how you organise yourself to be successful and the excellence of your results. It improves your understanding of where you are now, the potential you could fulfil and the steps to take to achieve sustainable success.
The Model recognises there are many approaches to achieving sustainable success. It is therefore a non-prescriptive management framework. It is based on the premise that customer satisfaction, people (employee) satisfaction and impact on society are achieved through leadership driving policy & strategy, people management, resources and processes, leading ultimately to excellence in business results.
The Model has nine criteria.The first five criteria are known as the Enablers and represent the activities that the organisation manages.The next four criteria are known as the Results and are the outcomes of the management activities.
The most common way to use the Model is to conduct a self-assessment. It is generally recognised that there are six different types of self-assessment. The different approaches reflect a trade-off between the extent to which they are demanding on time and cost and the robustness of the inputs (the factual evidence available) and outputs (the strengths and areas for improvement identified).
The important thing is for every organisation to choose the approach that is best suited to its requirements at any given stage.
